Breast surgery covers a range of procedures: augmentation with silicone or saline implants, breast lift (mastopexy), reduction, and reconstructive work after mastectomy. Some surgeons also do revision cases where a previous implant needs to be replaced or removed. Ottawa has 29 practices offering some combination of these procedures, ranging from dedicated plastic surgery clinics to hospital-affiliated surgeons who also handle reconstructive cases.
What to look for in a surgeon
Certification matters most: confirm the surgeon is certified in plastic surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, not just a general cosmetic or family medicine background. Ask where the procedure will actually happen. Reputable clinics use accredited surgical facilities, not an uninspected back room, and the surgeon should be able to name that accreditation without prompting.
A solid consultation covers implant type and placement (over or under the muscle), sizing based on your chest measurements rather than a number you saw online, and a clear rundown of complication rates, including capsular contracture and the possibility of revision surgery down the road. Before and after photos should be of the surgeon's own patients, with similar body types to yours, not stock images. Recovery timelines, follow up schedule, and what happens if something goes wrong after the fact are all worth pinning down before you book.
How we score providers
Our ranking weighs verified credentials, patient feedback specific to breast procedures, facility accreditation, and consistency of results shown in before and after documentation. The full breakdown of how we weight these factors is on our methodology page.
